About the Singer

Honest Vulnerability

Tonty is a DMV (D.C, Maryland, Virginia area) based recording artist and singer-songwriter who has been singing since before she could walk. Trained as a classical lyric coloratura soprano, she has a strong devotion to music in all of its forms and an inconvenient need to make others happy. Raised on gospel and soul, she feels more at home in a bookstore than anywhere else and is the true definition of an extroverted introvert.

Get to know the original Heartbeat

Q: How did you know music was the industry for you?

I always knew. I have always loved anything creative: writing, sewing, drawing (although I'm not a great artist.) My mother wanted me to be in the medical industry, and my father thought journalism could be a good idea. All of my close family and friends told my parents to let me sing, because it's where my heart lies.

Q: What is your favorite song to sing?

There are so many choices that I can't choose one. I will say my favorite genre to sing is R&B - the emotion is unmatched. However, as a music lover, I can find something I love in every style of music.

Q: Name some of your musical influences or inspriations.

Let me start by saying I respect anyone who allows the world to hear their music or the song in their heart - this is cheesy, but true. The singers/musicians who have most influenced me are (just to name a few): Nat King Cole, Jessye Norman, Beyonce, Chrisette Michele, Judy Garland, Ariana Grande, Jazmine Sullivan. And many, MANY more.

Q: What is a weird talent you have or a talent you're proud of?

It's not necessarily weird, but I do remember a vast amount of tv and movie quotes. I also have a pretty fantastic sense of direction.
